Secure hardware wallet: quick setup guide

Welcome — this short presentation walks you through setting up a Trezor hardware wallet, from unboxing to making your first secure backup and sending a test transaction.

Tip: Always use the official start page: trezor.io/start

Unboxing & Physical Check

What to inspect immediately

Inspect tamper-evident seals and packaging. Verify device model and serial number. Always buy from authorized sellers and compare the physical device against official images.

  • Check seals, connectors, and screen condition.
  • Confirm secure purchase channel.
  • Keep packaging until setup is complete.

Connect & Visit Setup Site

Use the official start page

Go to trezor.io/start. Connect your device to the computer using the supplied USB cable. Follow on-screen prompts to install any official bridge or firmware if required.

Initialize the Device

Create a new wallet or restore

Choose “Create new” to initialize a fresh seed. The device will generate a recovery phrase (seed). Confirm the device's prompts by physically pressing its buttons — this ensures actions are authorized.

Write Down Your Recovery Seed

Single most important step

The recovery seed is the only way to restore funds if the device is lost/damaged. Write the seed on the supplied card or on a secure metal backup. Store it in a safe, offline location.

  • Do not photograph or store the seed digitally.
  • Consider multiple geographically separated copies for long-term safety.

Set PIN & Optional Passphrase

Layered security approach

A PIN protects the device if physically stolen. An optional passphrase adds hidden-wallet capability and protects the seed. Choose a memorable but strong PIN; consider using a passphrase only if you understand recovery implications.

Install Cryptocurrency Apps

Manage coins and accounts

Use the Trezor app or recommended companion (from trezor.io/start) to install coin-specific apps and create accounts. Each account shows addresses on the device — always verify wallet addresses on the Trezor screen before sending funds.

Send a Small Test Transaction

Verify end-to-end flow

Before moving large amounts, send a small amount to a new address and confirm receipt. Check transaction details on both the app and device display. This reduces risk from misconfiguration or third-party issues.

Ongoing Maintenance

Keep firmware and software updated

Regularly check for official firmware updates at trezor.io/start. Only update firmware when notified by official channels and always verify release information from the official website.

Recovery & Emergency Planning

Prepare for loss, damage, or death

Document an emergency plan for trusted executors (without exposing the seed). Use multi-copy metal backups, encrypted vaults, or legal estate planning as appropriate. Ensure instructions exclude placing seed in online storage. Test recovery periodically.
